IEG Multi-Level Sampling Well

Applications
The IEG Multi-Level Sampling Well is used for sampling of soil and groundwater in a single borehole.

System Components
The Multi-Level sampling well consists of a groundwater monitoring well (I.D. usually 4") with several screened intervals positioned at specific depths. In the saturated, as well as unsaturated zones, the annulus around the screened intervals is filled with filter gravel. The annulus around the cased PVC-pipe sections between the screened sections is sealed with Bentonite. These sealed sections between the horizontal sampling levels are designed to prevent vertical flow of soil air and / or groundwater during the sampling, thereby assuring more accurate readings for the horizontal sampling at specific depths of the aquifer and / or the vadose zone.
Pre-assembled packers are installed in the PVC pipe cased sections which are positioned between the horizontal sampling horizons. Several stainless-steel sampling chambers consisting of a piston operating inside a cylinder, the number depending on the total of horizontal sampling areas desired, are positioned between the sealed sampling levels. These pistons are inter-connected by a single piston drive, which can be operated manually or by an electrical drive.

Method of Operation
Up and downward motion of the piston causes the cylinder chambers to fill with soil air or groundwater, depending on the particular depth of the sample intake. A strategically placed check valve controls the in- and outflow for an individual cylinder. The sample can be brought to the surface without creating negative pressure, a situation frequently leading to distorted analysis results.

Advantages
  • The number of sampling levels in the saturated and unsaturated zones is practically unlimited.
  • Since the samples are removed without lowering the water table or creating a cone of depression, the natural flow conditions in the aquifer remain undisturbed. Vertical flow in the sampling area which could result in distorted values, therefore is almost entirely prevented.
  • Material and personnel cost for this method are lower by far than conventional sampling with piezometers or nested wells, since only one worker is needed to operate the hand pump, activating all sampling levels at the same time.
  • No distorted analysis results caused by "cross contamination" of contaminants during sampling, since all components in contact with groundwater or soil air, are firmly mounted in the multi level sampling well
  • Sampling procedure can be reproduced, repeated, providing accurate readings.
